Expanding Equitable EV Charging Access Across Maryland
Through the Charging and Fueling Infrastructure (CFI) Discretionary Grant Program, MCEC is working to expand equitable EV charging infrastructure throughout Maryland. With a focus on underserved communities and rural areas, this initiative is making clean transportation more accessible for all Maryland residents.
MCEC and its partners received federal grant funding to install electric vehicle charging stations along an Alternative Fuel Corridor and in low-to-moderate income communities across Maryland. A total of 58 MCEC Community Charging Sites have been approved across the state. The program is part of the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Charging and Fueling Infrastructure (CFI) Discretionary Grant Program.
The Maryland Equitable Charging Infrastructure Partnership (MECIP), led by MCEC, has been awarded a total of $48 million in federal funding — an initial $15 million award followed by an additional $33 million — to expand electric vehicle charging infrastructure across Maryland. This investment is accelerating Maryland’s commitment to clean energy and equitable access to EV charging.
The MECIP program focuses on bringing EV charging to communities that have historically been left behind. Planned locations include faith-based sites, municipal sites, tourism and travel locations, auto dealerships looking to expand EV services, and over 34 community sites located in low-to-moderate income and historically disadvantaged communities to be installed in multifamily housing. The project exceeds Justice40 goals and includes workforce development initiatives that provide training and career pathways in the EV charging industry.
MECIP also includes a workforce development component, providing training and financing to support under-represented groups entering the EV charging industry. The program is developing Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Training (EVIT) pathways to support good-paying careers in clean energy. This initiative helps ensure that the economic benefits of the clean energy transition are shared broadly across Maryland communities.
