Charging at Home
Most EV drivers do the majority of their charging at home. There are three types of chargers to consider: Level 1 chargers use a standard household outlet and require no special installation, making them a convenient option if your vehicle sits overnight. Level 2 chargers require a 240-volt outlet and professional installation but can fully charge most EVs in four to six hours, making them the most practical choice for home use.
EV Incentives
Maryland and federal programs offer meaningful financial incentives for EV purchases and home charger installation. You may be eligible for federal tax credits for a qualifying new EV or plug-in hybrid under the Inflation Reduction Act. An HOV permit is also available for EV drivers regardless of the number of passengers. Individual Maryland utilities, including Pepco, BGE, Delmarva, Potomac Edison, and SMECO, offer additional rebates for EV charger installation.

MCEC Charging & Fueling Program
Through the Charging and Fueling Infrastructure (CFI) Discretionary Grant Program, MCEC is working to expand equitable EV charging infrastructure throughout Maryland. A total of 58 MCEC Community Charging Sites have been approved across the state, with a focus on ensuring access in underserved communities through the Justice40 Initiative. This program is part of MCEC’s broader commitment to making clean transportation accessible to all Maryland residents.
